Green Man Pub Sign

I will briefly mention two public houses in Little Snoring.

One, on the Holt Road is the GREEN MAN. In 1836 the Innkeeper was another of my relatives, John Tuddenham, a shoemaker of Little Snoring.

In June 1855 his son (also named John) married a SOUTHGATE - Hannah (or Anna) Elizabeth Southgate from Great Snoring. They married in St Andrew's Church in Little Snoring.

In addition, John Tuddenham's sister Phoebe Tuddenham is my Great-Great-Grandmother.

John Junior in fact married three times and his story is a fascinating one, but perhaps here is not the time or place for it. He spent his whole life in Little Snoring and was variously described as cordwainer, baker, grocer, shopkeeper and butcher. And later as a farmer, and butcher in Fakenham. It is said that he didn't collect his debts from the poor of Fakenham and that he spent a lot of money on a lawsuit over his son Charles. He died in 1897, after eating mussels. The story of the Tuddenhams and their family - and their house in Little Snoring - is covered HERE

Indeed both of Lt Snoring's pubs were run by my relatives, since George Flowerdew was the innkeeper at THE BELL. His widow Elizabeth married Albert (Hubbard) Tuddenham - none other than the SON of John above.

The Green Man, Little Snoring

TGreen Man Interior 2009his pub is still going as far as I know. It was my family's "local" and was only a few hundred yards from our house in The Oaklands.

The pub is situated alongside the A148 main tourist route into North Norfolk between Fakenham and Holt, approximately 2 miles east of Fakenham (Holt Road) Post Code NR21 0AY.

The photograph of the interior was taken at the same time as the exterior shot opposite (2009) and at that time does show it "To Let". And here is a sales brochure with more details of the Pub, and a few more interior photos.

The website for this pub seems to have disappeared, but the information given at the same time as the photos says this: The Green Man Inn & Restaurant is a family-run business; Steve and Sarah Harrison are the Proprietors and nephew Ben is Head Chef and Assistant Manager. Home made food served, entertainment nights, and beer garden and children's playground to the rear.

Little Snoring White HouseThe White House, Little Snoring

John Tuddenham Senior is the first listed as Innkeeper. The Tuddenham family owned a property called "The White House" in Little Snoring, not far from the Church. Here is a photo.

John Tuddenham's granddaughter (Mary Ann aka 'Polly') married John Wills in West Ham, Essex, in 1885 and they had a daughter called Edith. She in her turn married Albert Edward Elsdon. (See his photo in the sidebar standing alongside my relatives George Southgate and his wife Alice, of Great Snoring. George ran The Unicorn pub in Gt Snoring, and you can see him standing outside it on The Unicorn page.)

This family - The Wills and Elsdons - although based in London, came to live in Little Snoring at the outbreak of war. The story of Edith's daughter Rhoda, with more detail about Little Snoring, can be seen with accompanying photos in the book HERE.

Included in the book (which you may read online) is a group photograph taken opposite the White House. On my web page for the Tuddenhams you'll find out who is in the photograph and how they are related to one another and to the Little Snoring story.

The Bell, Little Snoring

Albert Hubbard TuddenhamLittle Snoring once had two pubs, but The Bell was closed in December 1965 and knocked down in the 70's. There is now a modern house called Sell House on the site.

The map in the sidebar shows the location of The Bell. Unfortunately I can find no photograph of the old Bell - perhaps somebody can help?

The Bell appears on Bryants 1826 map and was named the "Blue Bell" in 1836. It was damaged by enemy action 19th August 1942. 79 barrels of beer were sold in the year prior to closure, reason for closing given as `Uneconomic'; ceased trading 14th February 1966 according to Licence Register.

As I already mentioned, there was a family link between The Green Man and The Bell, in that Albert "Hubbard" Tuddenham SEEN LEFT (grandson of John the Proprietor of The Green Man) married the widow who kept The Bell, Elizabeth Flowerdew when her husband George died in 1902 . She was described as "an old witch" by Ethel Goude, a family member.
